Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS): A Member of Polymeric Organosilicon Compounds Used In Various Industries Due To Its Versatility and Properties

Image
Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is a compound that is commonly used for the development of contact lenses, but it has many other uses as well. Surfactants and foaming agents are among the many things that are made from PDMS. Other uses include, the treatment of petroleum jelly and rubber. The chemicals used in the manufacture of cosmetics and medicines may also be derived from PDMS. The production facilities for PDMS in Europe are located in France, Germany and the U.K. In Germany, PDMS is classified as “slightly water polluting”. It was not that long ago that scientists thought there might be some connection between the use of polydimethylsiloxane in cosmetics and the development of allergic reactions. Scientists have since conducted studies and discovered that there actually are connections between the use of this chemical agent and the development of eczema and allergic reactions. The link between cosmetics and skin irritation and allergy is a result of the fact that the ingredients in...
