Carboxymethyl Cellulose is being used in Multiple Industries with Key Manufacturers Expanding their Production Facilities

Carboxymethyl Cellulose (CMC) is a unique compound, which makes it one of the most important ingredients that are used in today's modern-day kitchens. This polymer was discovered as a result of extensive research and studies conducted by a number of different pharmaceutical companies over the years. The most common uses for this material include food and cosmetic products, as well as being used in foodstuffs, such as ice cream, chocolate, cookies, doughnuts, breads, and cakes, carboxymethyl cellulose has also become popular for use in many other cosmetic products as well. It is not only used for packaging. It is also a popular choice for decorating clothing, shoes, and other items.

Another group of cosmetic products that use this substance includes haircare, skincare, nail care, bath, and body products. It is very difficult to find any product that is not produced with this particular type of polymer. CMC is soluble in water at any temperature. Since it is highly hygroscopic in nature, it hydrates rapidly. CMC finds applications in various drug delivery and tissue engineering purposes. For instance, it is used in apomorphine, a drug used mainly used to regulate motor responses of individuals with Parkinson’s disease. CMC has shown better performance than a starch-based delivery vehicle. Furthermore, sodium CMC has been used in gastrointestinal drug delivery. Besides, when it is combined with hydroxyapatite and chitosan, it CMC can be used for dental and bone regeneration purposes.

The sodium salt of carboxymethyl cellulose (NaCMC) is used in oral, injectable, ophthalmic, and topical pharmaceutical formulations. However, NaCMC when it is used as a binder gives rise to softer granules that exhibit excellent compressibility. Researchers across the globe, especially in Mexico, Japan, and Germany are continuing their R&D activities, in order to boost the capabilities of CMC. Recently, in Japan, major players in the CMC business have expanded their CMC production facilities to boost sales and cater to the demand.
