Everything You Need To Know About Automotive Wire and Cable Materials

Wires and cables are indispensable components of the automotive industry. Air conditioners, lights, Seat heaters, transmission, braking, engine, and various dashboard applications such as fuel meter and speedometer, all require wires and cables to function. The cable is a collection of individually insulated wires in a twisted form, jacketed together. Moreover, applications of automotive cables and wires have grown rapidly over time with the advancement of new technologies and customer aspirations. Different types of cables are used in automotive that need to deal with heat, vibration, hydrocarbons, etc.

The automotive wire and cable materials demand is directly influenced by the automotive demand. Furthermore, the demand for automotive wire and cable has increased rapidly due to the increasing demand for electric and hybrid vehicles worldwide. In October 2020, the Korean auto cables manufacturer started constructing a US$ 22 million production center in Serbia. The company manufactures electronic components, mainly cable sets for auto giants, such as BMW, Volvo, Ford, VW, Kia, and Hyundai.
Moreover, growing demand for specialty wires and cables has increased due to increasing applications, such as seatbelt pretension wire, frontal airbag wire, sliding door sensor cable, gas tank wire, battery cable, fuse link, databus, wheel speed sensor cable, bearing grease wire, etc. There are two main categories of automotive wire, such as Cross-Linked and PVC. The main difference between the two is the temperature range. The cross-linked automotive wire can withstand much higher temperatures than PVC automotive wire. These cables and wires are made of different types of materials.
The most popular types of materials are copper and aluminum. However, copper is a predominantly used material because it is more flexible, conductive, and less likely to corrode in comparison to aluminum wire. PVC is the most commonly used material for jacketing and insulation of copper wires and cables in the automotive industry. Moreover, cables and wires are manufactured with different colors to identify, manage, and repair the wires.
