Thrombectomy Devices Helps Remove Thrombus from Neuro Vasculature in Patients with Acute Ischemic Stroke

Thrombectomy is a popular form of surgical treatment used to remove blood clots from veins and arteries. Normally, arteries carry arterial blood with oxygenated blood and nutrients for the body. In the case of a blood clot, the blood vessel wall becomes damaged and does not allow blood to pass through easily. One may experience pain in the chest, shortness of breath, coughing, feeling light-headed or dizzy. Thrombectomy is used in such situations to remove blood clots. Blood clots can obstruct blood flow, leading to life-threatening conditions such as an acute stroke or pulmonary embolism.

Thrombectomy devices can be used in both acute and chronic thrombosis. The two main types of clotting devices used are aspiration catheters and stent retailers. They are used to remove blood clots from a main cerebral artery to restore blood flow after acute ischemic stroke. Both are available as a single device or in combination models. An aspiration catheter is used to inject the medication into the clot, whereas the stent retriever is used in conjunction with an aspiration catheter to clear large thrombus in the brain. Stent retrievers appear to be safe and effective devices, achieving high recanalization rates and good clinical outcomes in the endovascular treatment of patients with acute ischemic stroke. Ischemic stroke is the most common type of stroke and accounts for around 74% of strokes in Singapore. Moreover, the prevalence of ischemic strokes in Italy has increased gradually over the years.

The demand for thrombectomy devices is high in hospitals, as well as the demand is growing constantly in the ambulatory surgical centers as they provide help on an immediate basis. Merci retriever was among the first thrombectomy devices to receive FDA approval in the United States. In the U.S., several medical device companies have received FDA approval for their thrombectomy devices. For instance, in September 2020, a medical device company launched its thrombectomy system in the U.S. after receiving FDA clearance. Other thrombectomy devices can be used in conjunction with thrombectomy devices to clear the blocked arteries.
