Botanical and Plant Derived Drugs are slowly gaining popularity as consumers shifting towards natural products for therapeutics

Botanical drugs are those drugs that are derived from medicinal plants, while plant-derived drugs are a combination of botanical as well as other approved drugs that contain synthetic, plant materials, and semi-synthetic substances. Generally, botanical drugs are comprised of vegetable substances and algae. These drugs are typically used in the treatment of numerous diseases including infectious diseases, respiratory diseases, central nervous system disorders, and cardiovascular diseases. These drugs are available in different forms including tablets, pills, and injections.

Botanical drugs have witnessed massive adoption in dermatology due to the increased prevalence of skin disorders. The prevalence of skin disorders across the globe was 58.1 in rural areas in 2018. Besides, it is finding major traction due to increasing use in central nervous system disorders. Multiple central nervous system receptors can interact with plant components and extracts and thus, they play a crucial role in central nervous disorders. Moreover, hormone diseases include endocrine system diseases that affect the endocrine system glands. Botanical and plant derived drugs are found to be effective against such diseases. Its other therapeutic applications include treatment for joint diseases, dysentery, and renal diseases.

However, stringent regulations on the approval of these drugs have been one of the major obstacles so far. Besides, there is a limited market for these drugs, and hence a very small portion of the population is adopting these drugs. Governments across the globe have enforced strict regulatory policies on the use and approval of these drugs. That being said, countries such as the U.S., Italy, and the U.K. are witnessing increased adoption of botanical and plant derived drugs due to growing preference for natural products. Recently, the U.S. FDA approved Zhaohe Cao-based botanical drug as an investigational new drug indicated for cancer therapy.
