Mobile Card Reader is a software card reader designed to work with the Apple iPod Touch and iPhone. It is an add-on that enables you to use a credit card reader that can read major credit and debit cards. A mobile card reader is basically a small electronic device that connects directly to a smartphone or tablet to accept payment via credit or debit cards, basically turning the device into an electronic point of sale (EPOS). Mobile card readers provide various functions, allowing different transactions through several means including credit card swipe, magnetic stripe, electronic signature, and tap-and-go payment transactions. The EPOS transaction process is usually faster than a traditional card swiping or tap-and-go method since it eliminates the need for cardholders to carry lots of cash. As a result, EPOS systems are often used at places where a high level of security is required, usually at corporate offices. This is because transactions are usually protected from unauthorized use.

Most modern smartphones and tablets have built-in mobile card reader applications that can be used as a portable device and which are capable of accepting payments from multiple merchants and services at the same time. Generally, the process of swiping a smartphone or a tap-and-go reader to make a purchase or enter sensitive information takes only a matter of seconds, as the device detects the appropriate payment card at the point of sale. Most devices, however, only support one type of payment card, so it is important for buyers to ensure that they will be able to easily switch between credit and debit cards while traveling or attending business meetings on the move.

In addition, it makes it easier for merchants to process payments as they do not need to store all of the necessary data in their processing system. Because they can use the reader to accept all major payment cards and contact information at the point of sale, merchants can process all of the card transactions going on in real-time, taking advantage of the instant processing capabilities of these devices.
